I put this one together for about $300. Got a lot of the wood for free from a friend and a craigslist ad asking someone to come pick up their old wood fence. Built a wood frame, stained and water-proofed it, and then stapled in a pond liner from home depot. The grow media is 8" base layer of lava rock mixed with crushed river rocks (that hydroton is expensive!) I just use one bag of hydroton mixed with mostly pea gravel for the top 3" layer so it's easy to put in your young plants. And then the ratios 1:1 for water in the fish tank to gallons of grow-bed, and 1 fish per 3 to 6 gallons of pond water (20 to 40 fish). Seems to be doing ok

So you have a bottom filter as well as a grow bed. 

What a nice way to introduce people to aquaponics; I think that's great!

I've building a simple IBC system in order to show others how they too can get into aquaponics.

My other system would probably appear too complicated and costly, but I'd really like to show others how it can be done at a minimal cost.

Nice to see such green plants with no supplemental lighting.

Is that gravel or water plants in the fish tank?
