Actually, yes, it's intended for 2 things: 1) to serve as a better grow-area for lettuce (since my tiny 35 gal roughneck is barely big enough to be called a "raft bed". 2) I needed a bypass - basically my sump is only a 55 gal drum, so rather than driving 100% of the sump-pump flow back to tank, is on basically a 60/40 split: 60 to tank, 40% to the NFT "snake" (I call it a "zig zag").. Anyhow, I just cut 3" holes in the snake like today, so I'll have room to place 22 3" hydro-cups for the purposes of growing lettuce and possibly some spinach and swiss-chard. Since I don't physically have the space to accommodate a respectable rafting-bed (AND since I needed a bypass line) I figured a zig-zag NFT solution would serve both purposes nicely.. so far, so good.
