Roots of basil in NFT system are covered with a clear 'slime' that doesn't seem normal. Anyone have any thoughts on what this is?

No.  The plant pathologist at U of Penn thought it might be a natural excretion of the roots.  I have increased the aeration of the water and water flow rate to its maximum.  Still doing it.  Now raising largemouth bass and feeding them AquaMax 500.

Ever figure it out? Iron bacteria?

When this happened I had only 7 small goldfish and I feed them goldfish flakes. My three experimental lettuce plants are starting to have a root or two emerging from the net cup. Let's see what happens to them.  I bought an new, larger bubbler today to improve aeration.

Could be to much corn or animal fat in the Fish Food. Like using Dog food will leave a nasty film on everything causing DO to drop as it blocks the bacteria and suffocates from the film Going anaerobic.

This was before cleaning up the system, improving the filtering, and switching over to lrgmouth bass eating AquaMax game fish feed.  Have turned up water flow rate, as well. Have a couple experimental lettuce seedlings to see how they do.

Lack of air or poor water circulation. Or what food you are feeding you fish.
