Only the horizontal bottom section of the pipe is slotted to allow water to flow from the base of the filter up through the media. I plan to use broken brick, 19 mm gravel, 13 mm gravel and filter sponge in the unit.

Kobus, on that note, you should be fine. with that few fish the large filter will do an awesome job, the water will most likely be crystal clear. the drain might be a good idea, even if its only every couple of years.

cheers, headed to the airport.

Rob, in your experience, will it really clog up that fast if it is getting a small percentage (around 20% of all the solids produced in the system?  I do not have a problem with making the adjustments but with 25 fish in the system, am not expecting a crisis.  None of the beds have been cleaned in nearly 2 years.

mostly, it would help the slug from clogging the drain holes. When cleaning, you can "backwash" the media and it will help keep the drain from getting blocked. in my experience these work great as a filter, but will clog and need to be cleaned. making that process as simple as possible is a good idea. Koi Pen.com has lots of examples of this type of filter.

That would be the clever thing to do hey ?

I can still add a drain as the structure has not been filled with gravel yet.  Not sure if I want to put in a false bottom though - can you elaborate how that would assist in the unit working better?

Maybe a drain and false bottom for cleaning?
