HI Kobus Glad to see you are back...... Kobus I live down the road from you....... I have been messing around with Aquaponics since 2006.............I wish I had found this forum-you sooner I would have loved speaking to you while my system was running. I felt very alone in this field...only find you now.... Hope we can meet sometime Regards Francois
Nice to see that we have other SA's on the site. We are a group of friends that is busy exploring this unknown. So far I'm the only one winning with the challenge. You have a very nice setup.
I am not sure if I sent the last comment. The link I sent was to some photos of the mixed system I recently built. I believe Sylvia also has a link on Facebook- Aquaponic Garden
I think I may have won our bet. I found a partner and after next week, we will officially have a business started!!!! As always, I wish you the very best.
PS - So ummm what did I win? I was thinking a possible visit from you to see our operation here in Minneapolis!
I used a 2" layer of fine river gravel with 10"+ of fine playground sand on top. I don't think it really matters too much what kind of sand you use, though. Whatever's available and cheapest. You want to wash it out quickly first, just like most other media.
I am grateful for any help I can get on this. I have a small group at home (US) who have set up a system there and then came here (Nigeria) for a week to build it.I now have it to make it successful! I would be glad also to share anything that would help you as we go.
We are very new to aquaponics and are in the planning and research stage. We have 2 systems in the planning stage and will no doubt have many many questions.
One of the first that comes to mind is with regards fish and light.nI have read that in order to prevent algae growth the fish tanks shound be kept away from light. Does this man that the fish can be kept in darkness? This may seem like an obvious question but any guidance will be appreciated.
Great idea to get us Saffas together because most of the pricing, sourcing etc that gets discussed here doesn't apply to us locally and half the items people mention are named something else on this side of the world. So good one.
I am just starting out as an aquapon, I am currently sourcing materials for a greenhouse so I can grow all year long. However I am not doing this undertaking for my own benefit. The company I am working for, a film and television production company, wants to use some of their garden space to grow veggies and produce fish for the office (we get lunch here everyday) as well as giving one of our staff a way to become financially independent by selling the produce at markets and so on.
So its great in that I get to build this system on someone else's budget but tricky in that I need to get it right. If there are any of you living in or around Joburg I would love to check out your system and share ideas with you in person, because seeing is believing and with all the varieties of systems and theories out there it would be great to see what works best in our climate/with our available resources.
Great to know that there are some EC okes involved in AP. How far along are you in the process? I have a million questions (well, nearly) that I'd like to ask you... BE WARNED!
Kobus I typed a research paper for a class and I used some information you have put on this community. Please tell me if I misused or in any way misconstrued your statements. They are about growbed design and duckweed. Also I want to send you the document so I know if I made a mistake, as I'm posting this on the community. If you would like your quotes to be taken away I can revise the paper. Thank you.
Hey buddy, sorry for late response. I'm happy that you found solid work and am sure you will make a difference to improve the quality of life for your countrymen. I sure miss your input and feedback. Please don't be a stranger and drop me a line once in a while.
Hi Kobus, I read in one of your posts that you moved to cape town. I also stay in cape town. The aquabug bit me and now I am planning my first setup. But with so many startup failures because of bad planning I want to take my time and learn everything before I start spending money. Would be nice if we can meet up so that I can pick your brain get some knowledge transfer.
