I built my own tank, about 250 gallons and lined it with insulation board. I was contemplating running heaters next winter, but I was not sure how much that would run my bill up. I definitely want to avoid killing my fish though. My water got down into the low to mid 50's so I need to make sure it is 20 degrees warmer.

We started with goldfish. Then Alex gave us a bunch of Tilapia and they were doing well. We had some that were bigger than my hand and some that were only a couple of inches long. Then it got cold and they started dying. We lost about 20-30 fish and were only able to save 10 by putting them in the bathtub in the house. We bought aquarium heaters and put them back outside in one tank but our electricity bill went up quite a bit. We hope to have something else by next winter to heat the hole green house.

They where hybrids to begin with . I bred them about 5 times and gave those all away.

Did you start with fingerlings or fry? Or did you get breeders?

I was never able to find any locally unless some fellow aquapons are willing to share. Rob Nash in Austin is where I got mine.
