Hello. I am a new member exploring the option of hydroponics. I have the desire to grow our own food. I also want to grow enough to feed us through the year, and enough to give away to those in need. I currently use raised beds and gardening by the square foot.

I am thinking about a hydro system in my basement or in a greenhouse. I am not sure how to start. My email is swallick@swallick.com. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Speedwell. New here, too. If you "google"tilapia, there is a guy in downtown Knoxville who advertised tilapia and says he will help new comers set up their system. I thought about going and seeing what he has.

Hi Blooms, Welcome to the AP addiction. You are under 3 hrs from us. Here's a map.If you feel like a drive come look although we are in transition still getting the front of the GH done and 10 more GBs but still lots to see that has been up and running for nearly 2 yrs. One trout that we haven't harvested must be 18" now. Water temps are still in the low 50's so growth has not hit it's usual craziness quite yet, soon tho.

What size system are you planning? and feel free to post layouts and pics.

Hi everybody,

we live in Speedwell Tennessee and are just now getting started  in aquaponics. We got our tank  and beds this weekend and have started getting them at up. We  were hoping to  find a group in the area and get some up close looks into this awesome system. Really looking forward to learning lots.

Hey Zach, we haven't heard from you lately. How is your system going? I am not that far away if you need local advice or would like to visit here. We have things pretty torn up as we lay our S wall blocks but all is still running and a visit is worth a million words. Hope you are well.

One big advantage of Shady over Mtn. City is the central location to Bristol, Damascus VA., Elizabethton, and Mtn. City. The only place Mtn City is near is Shady. We are in Johnson Co.. You should check it out on line. Our daughter just signed on as a Paramedic in Stony Creek (Elizabethton) and is at work in about 30 min and our son is a ME in Damascus at CM Hoist in about 25 min so not far to anywhere and the commutes are to die for thru the Nat Park. They and their spouses all followed us down here and love it. We had dreamed they would but never really expected it to happen. It's that nice

I'm looking mostly central and eastern (Smith county, Johnson county).  I really like the mountain city area, but think economics may drive me further in... My wife really likes the Smith county area so we're watching everything east of Nashville.  We currently live about 15 miles from DC and tired of the city...

Hey Robert, good move. We are in NE TN near Bristol in a beautiful valley high up in the mountains, surrounded by National Forest, called Shady Valley. We enjoy long cool Summers (8 - 10F cooler than Bristol) and short snowy Winters and it is perfect for raising trout in our AP system. Where are you now and what part of TN are you looking at?

Folks, I'm not in TN yet--but wife and I are looking to retire there...  All the hydroponic and aquaponics work i'm doing today is intended to refine my knowledge so that I can apply them in TN.

Hey Zach, Smoky Mountain Aquaponics in Shady Valley, TN. You're about as close to us as anyone so far. How's it going? Flood much lately? @20 min of sun and 2 hrs of rain here lately. Nice and cool tho. We are at about 3000 feet and near Bristol which runs about 10 deg F hotter than us. Always good to get back from town to nature's air conditioning.
