I realize many of you are probably past the introductory stage, but for those who aren't, there's an aquaponics introductory workshop scheduled to be held in Portland, ME on Nov 22 @ 6pm at the Urban…Continue

Just wondering what inspires people to grow using aquaponics. How big is your system and what are your future goals with aquaponics.

Let's say you didn't heat the greenhouse during the winter, will the goldfish die, or just go into a hibernation? You're right about the electricity, that's an interesting project you've got with the dome.
there are more efficient ways to heat (and insulate) a greenhouse, but when it's 15 outside, it cost about $8 in electricity to heat that little greenhouse during the night. Sadly, it's far cheaper to get veggies from the grocery store during the winter.
Insightful videos Rob. That helped put this into perspective.
I'm in CT and can extend my season by about 2 months on the spring and fall. A small electric heater keeps it going a bit long on the tougher nights. go to my YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/web4deb and scroll down to the older videos. These a bunch of them in there about my Harbor Freight 10x12...including some where I'm growing lettuce in the dead of winter.
That makes sense Rob. With a simple greenhouse, what would be a typical season? I've got a small plot of land to work with, I'm considering starting with a 250 gal tank. What fish work best in this climate?
It's easy if you're willing to pay for heat and electricity. ;-) For the most part, if you're willing to put in a small greenhouse, you can extend your growing season by a few months. Much more than they you have to get fancy.
Hello NE AP group. I'm totally new to this, I discovered aquaponics through an article about farming in the inner city of Baltimore and I was completely intrigued. A little searching and I landed here. First off, how difficult is it to farm year round in New England?
Heidi,
The aquaponics workshop in Maine was organized through the Portland Permaculture meetup group. I don't remember their exact name, but its free to join the group & they have lots of workshops on growing in Maine. Welcome to the group!
Hi New England AP members! Another newbie here. Our family was looking for a better way to grow and AP seems perfect! Unfortunately here in the foothills of ME we are not as mild in temps as others have had it. Our areas has been staying pretty cold so I know we will have our work cut out for us when we design our outdoor system this summer. Just wanted to say hello and introduce ourselves. I am bummed we missed the gathering in Portland, ME in November so please let us know if another is scheduled as we would love to talk to others in the area. Have a great day everyone!
