Motives for aquaponics?

Just wondering what inspires people to grow using aquaponics. How big is your system and what are your future goals with aquaponics.

Hi Kitty,

Northern NH, huh?  That's a challenge!  I look forward to hearing your solutions.  Welcome to the group!

Well, I've just taken "the course" with Sylvia & Co.  and now have all winter to think about that perfect aquaponics setup... My husband and I are up here in northern NH, thinking about a commercial operation and mostly concerned with two things (the usual): the long, cold winters and being pretty far away from markets. Very interested in passive solar greenhouses and looking forward to learn about what works for others up here. Rob - your dome is awesome!

Hi Rob,

My son and I have enjoyed watching your videos on building and setting up your dome greenhouse.  I see you are the chair for the New England region for the Aquaponics Association, too.  Great!  I plan on joining soon.

Heidi, the dome is built from scratch, the first video about it is here.  I went with the dome because it's unique.  They can also handle a large snow load without any internal support.

Don, you're welcome to stop in, just send me a private message when you want to do it so I know I"ll be around.

Hey Rob I saw the pics of your dome - we are looking at greenhouses and i know you started with a basic Harbor Freight and now are expanding into the dome - Did you buy a kit or are you making your own?  Also why the dome instead of a standard greenhouse?  Just thought I would pick your brains as we are in ME and CT isn't much different in temp and snow.  Any advice would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Rob, I saw some of the pictures you posted of the dome, looked really cool!!  I would love to take a ride out to Eastford and check it out, next weekend maybe???

Hi Don,

I live in Eastford CT..  should be less than an hour's drive.  I have a small greenhouse and currently building a large geodesic dome greenhouse.

Greetings New Englanders!!!  I live in Hartford and am currently building a barrelponics system down in my basement.  Really excited about this and would really like to see some other systems in action, so if you live anywhere in New England, other than Maine and Northern Vermont and would be interested in showing off your set up, let me know!!

the fish water goes down to about 36 so the water won't freeze.  The fish just sit at the bottom of the tank for about 2 months and I stop feeding them....just a snack once in a while.
