Mad German, do you still have some of those giant sunflower and hibiscus seeds? I would love to get my hands on some, but I don't have anything to offer up yet, this season. I am very much a noob to heirloom seeds (heaven forbid, I used hybrids for years!) and aquaponics. I am looking forward to learning all I can!

Teresa,

I just joined this group and came across your comment. The lemon you are speaking of may very well be a "Meyer Lemon" which are known for being on the sweet side and give a LOT of juice. Meyer lemon trees are believed to have originated in China and came to the USA around the turn of the 20th Century. They are thought to be a cross between a Lemon and a Mandarin Orange because they are a bit on the sweet side instead of tart like normal lemons.  They aren't sold in grocery stores so I have to get mine from people in my area who have a tree on their property.  Just 3 or 4 of these lemons provides me with enough juice to last a month! :)

Thank you Teresa, I would love to try growing that lemon and other fruit. I would also like some wild flower seeds but what I need is in that list. At present I have a decent collection of both flower and vegetable seeds so don't really need those at this time but will make good addition to my personal seedbank.

Hi Carey,  You said US Post, Priority mail is best. 

I have some seeds I collected from a lemon (70 seeds from one lemon-unbelieveable amount).  I made a glass of lemonade from that one lemon and it was so delicious I plan to plant some in the spring.  Unfortunately I do not know what kind of lemon it was.  An 86yr old gentleman I befriended a few years ago brought several lemons from his tree to me on Thanksgiving day. It could be some kind of hybrid, as the taste is not the sour bitter taste I had expected.  It was a nice lemon and citrus flavor.  I can't wait to get more and grow a tree of my own.

I have some veggie seeds I could send, (heirloom), though nothing noted in your list.  Post the address you want us to use to send care packages, lol.

Hi Mad and Sahib, long time no chat. Thanks for your support. As far as I know, the USDA doesn't have jurisdiction on export but is up to the in coming countries customs department to determine if seed stock is aloud in. Most countries (esp developed) require that imported seeds have a special approved coating so as not to transmit fungi or disease.  At present, china is desperate for quality seeds and is willing to look the other way most of the time. I have had five people send seeds to me and was able to receive four out of the five times so your risk is mainly the loss of seeds. There should be no liability for you to send me "personal" amounts (vs import amounts/ by the ton). US Post, Priority mail has come through with no problems and is the cheapest method to send small bulk packages. 

I would gladly exchange for seeds I have but the likelihood of it getting through to you are a bit smaller as we (US customs) use dogs to sniff out contraband. I have excess: Giant Chinese crooked squash, Chinese broad beans and the sweetest purple skin peanuts I ever ate to trade. I can also get you an assortment of vacuum packed seeds that would have more of a chance of getting through but those are not heirloom seeds.

Another option is for you fellow Aquapons to help me buy seeds which I repay/ prepay. My 2012 wish list is as follows:Top of my seed wish list is both non-dormant Alfalfa and regular Alfalfa, Timothy Grass, Lucerne and Cowpeas followed by Mangel beets, Golden Eckendorf, Buckwheat, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Wormwood, Yarrow, and French Marigold. Any and all Orchard Grasses, Mints, Fescue, Ryegrass and Clovers. Fruit and flower seeds would be welcome esp. wildflower and sedum seeds. Any special plants would also be appreciated.

I hope I havn't scared you away with my long list and don't expect any single person to come to my aid. All I'm doing here is to relay my needs and hope some of you will lighten my load.

My thoughts on how to trade seeds without sending them through the mail:

Any physical gathering, whereas AP seed exchangers (us), are expected to be present, request of the gathering organizer the opportunity to set aside a time for such exchanges, (perhaps include in the event or course syllabus a slot for such exchanges).  I think it would be great to provide that opportunity at the AP convention, or when some of our commercial APers hold training and other such events. 

This web site provides the ability to list AP events.  As the AP Association gels and branches are formed, hopefully more regional or localized branches will be created, thereby bringing APers closer together, which in turn should help us all in the seed exchange endeavor.

Just some thoughts. 

Perhaps I will add a discussion in the general topics area and 'plant this seed', lol.
