Growing media

I am using a mixture of 50% perlite and Coir.  I now mix it evenly.  I use to stack it 5 inches of Perlite and then the Coir. the larger plants -tomato I used all Coir.  This is the recommended Vertigro mix. In a constant flow recirculating system Vertigro recommends all Perlite.  I want to test a few different medias and flow rates and timing.  I should be up and running with testing in the next few weeks.  What do you guys use and what do you recommend?

Hydroton - May be too heavy and expensive.
