Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

So in the planning stages for a workshop at my place some time in November or December.  I want to expand the 300 gallon system (it currently has only 300 gallons of gravel beds and I want to turn it into a 2:1 grow bed to fish tank ratio system by adding three more grow beds.)

I'm transferring comments from the wall to this discussion and we can continue discussion on the topic here to keep it better organized.

Who is interested in a workshop sometime in November or December. This will be a work day or weekend sort of thing where I get all the parts together to add more grow beds to my 300 gallon system and I invite who ever want to come over and help. This would give some hands on and eye witness experience about hooking up and filling deep grow beds on a flood and drain system with an Aquaponics Indexing valve feeding them.

I don't intend to charge any money for this. The trade will be some labor for washing the media to fill the grow beds. With a few extra people, this becomes very easy seeing as I was able to wash and fill for the first three beds all by myself.

Potluck lunch unless I can get the cook to fry or bbq some catfish for us.

Actually, that is worth a workshop all on it's own, seeing the actual processing of the fish.

I'll be sorting out the budget to get supplies as I can and if people can share time periods in Nov or Dec when they would be interested, let me know and hopefully over the next month I can start homing in on a date or weekend for this Gathering.

Thanks Jim. I probably just need to go back and read on your BYAP thread about when you did your workshops

I have a suggestion. Maybe structure the day with some Instruction time and handouts for folks to take as a takeaway for the workshop. I could provide the printing. The more structured the more likely folks are to come. Also ask for a pot luck lunch or provide one. Sort of like an old fashion barn raising. Also create a list of what tools etc folks could bring to make it go easier.

Since your having a WORK shop and not just an informational tour, I can send you copies of my release forms... just in case.....you may need them..

That would be cool with the flyer Jim
and Cosmo, I might have to take you up on the offer of printing. Perhaps we will have to get together sometime to work out the details of what kind of materials would be most appropriate for a casual workshop.

I would love to come, leaving Michigan in November or December, sounds like a great time. What city would we fly into?

Orlando (MCO) is the nearest big airport

You can likely count me in... Somebody has to keep Cosmo from turning your plans in a vertical layout.
I'll be there, employer permitting, but that puts it in serious question.
Share you schedule (if that is possible, I know I get lots of jobs that pop up last minute too) and I'll try to do this so the most people possible can attend.

Count me in. I thought about asking you a while back if I could come over so I could see how yours was set up. I would be glad to offer labor services for the increased knowledge. Let me know what date you pick. I can rearrange most any date with enough notice.
I'm often happy to give tours but things are going to be crazy for me for October so November and December will be the tour and workshop months. If anyone can't make whatever dates get arranged for the official workshop but still wish to visit sometime. Please contact me and we can make other arrangements.
