A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hi gang,

I need some food for my bluegills.  Looking at 1/8-3/16" pellets 41% protein from Aquatic Eco.  See this link for details.

AES adds $5 fee for small orders, and then there's shipping, so 5# (about what I need) will run me about $33 ($6.60/#)  Or, could get 15# and avoid minimum fee, at a cost of about $69 (including shipping)($4.60/#).  Or get 50# for about $120 total ($2.40/#).  But that's way more than I could use before letting it go stale.

Anyone want to go in on a purchase of either 15# or 50# together and split the cost?  Please let me know by end of Thursday.

Or, anyone have some equivalent surplus food you want to unload for a reasonable cost?  Or know of a local supplier of small quantities?

Looked at food on this site's store, but it's all for tilapia (ie lower protein).  Found Purina Aquamax for sale online elsewhere, but only in 50# bags...

Paul, I use Skretting if available, otherwise Aquamax. Any purina dealer can get aquamax in for you, for only $30 per 50 lb. Keep it cool an dark and it will last. I must the outside of the bag with bleach water, and do the same to a plastic garbage can, let it all dry, and then put the bag in the can.

BSFL is really the ultimate way to go, and bluegill will take quite a bit of vegetation. They go bonkers over water cress.

thanks Jon!

Bit the bullet and picked up a 50# bag of Aquamax 500 (3/16" pellet), 41% protein from local feed store for $50.  Wasn't quite as cheap as Jon thought it'd be, but still lots cheaper than anything online.  If anyone wants to share any portion of this, I'm happy to offer it to you at cost ($1/#).
