Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I want to share some info on what worked for us and request others to do the same for deep water culture, friendly-style. (or not?)

From Baker Creek Seeds, rareseeds.com, we used Rocky Top Mix for a long time- beautiful, colorful, grew well.

Red Cross from Johnnys did not do well- too leggy, and bolted early.

Now our best performers are Dancine and Australe from Johnny's Seeds. We are looking for the best possible butterhead/Boston variety these days. Anyone have a winner?

For butter lettuce I mainly grow Dancine and Rex. They are both very compact heads and dense heads that can be spaced at 6" for grow-out.I actually like Dancine the best because of its sweet flavor. I have a few chefs that go nuts for it.

I also grow Cherokee, Rhazes, Bambi, Pansee, and Paradai. When considering seed I prefer compact heads with heat tolerance. Most every Johnnies seeds the show heat resistance will do well in the system.

Most of the varieties I grow were all Johnnies seeds originally. With the high cost of seed and the fact that we cannot ship seed from farther in the USA, I now grow most of my own seed. I select a few of the best heads out of each harvest and plant them in soil so they can go to seed. Each head that goes to seed can give me up to 1000+ seeds. For varieties like Rex and Dancine, each head that goes to seed saves me $10 of more! I am also working on crosses of these varieties by letting them cross pollinate.

Hey guys, can anyone say what I may have done wrong? After a year of doing DWC I am experiencing my lettuce leaves turning black.

Howdy, we grow laurel from hydro gardens along with others , we have grown over 10,000 heads, nice forming easy to start, www.globalaquaponics.net free to see video or blog, enjoy from lilypad farm
