Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I was wondering if anyone knows where to purchase freshwater prawns. I would like to try raising some if possible but I do not know where to get them, what they eat, or what it takes to raise them at all. Any information would be helpful.

The giant tiger prawns require lots of space per creature and warm water.  In Florida they require a special permit and inspections since they are not native.  Miami aquaculture sells them if you have the proper permits for your state.  The minimum order is probably around 1000 though I'm not sure.

They eat detritus and will probably eat fish feed or potatoes, peas and carrots for that matter.  In aquaponics I have only really heard of Friendly growing them in HI under the rafts in their system for a season or two.  I don't think they fed them, just let them eat the detritus but by the end of the season you probably only get about one grown out prawn per square meter of raft bed space since they are very territorial creatures.
