Due to an upsurge in customer requests Phoenix Tropical Fish is now serving the aquaponics market with Mozambique (Oreochromis mossambicus) tilapia. 2-3 inch fingerlings are selling for $2.50 each. There fish look pretty close to pure which a must admit surprised me. Most commonly these fish are seen hybridized with O. urolepis hornorum to create a very popular yellow/red fish called a "golden tilapia." Personally I prefer the taste of Mozambiques though they have an inferior filet ratio to the Nile/Blue hybrids that are normally seen and are not nearly as cold tolerant as they are. Mozambiques are also far easier to breed than Nile/Blues and can be raised in pure sea water. They are fully legal being one of the 5 allowed species.
