World Water Day

Every year the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) sponsors an worldwide event they call World Water Day.  

The U.S. Chapter of the Aquaponics Association is proposing a partnership with the Aquaponic Gardening Community to promote aquaponics through World Water Day on March 22.  While adopting this event would make sense for aquaponics any year, this year it makes particular sense because the theme is Water and Food - http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/- and building awareness of how much water is used in agriculture.  It is a perfect fit for us!

Given this, we propose the following plan.

• Solicit ideas for a slogan around aquaponics being a water-wise technique for growing food on this Community site.
• Create a tee-shirt using that theme and the WWD graphic and register it for sale with Café Press.
• Announce the availability of the tee-shirt and challenge members to do something on March 22 to promote aquaponics.  Some possible ways of doing this could be...

• Helping a school class build a small AP system
• Speaking to a local Rotary Club
• Giving a tour of your systems and announcing it in the local paper
• Holding a free class or workshop

• Once folks figure out what they are going to do, then we ask that they register it on a page here.  Register this page with the UN WWD website. http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/events/events-list/en/
• As members do their cool things on March 22 we ask that everyone try to do it wearing the tee-shirt and have someone take a picture of them “in the act”.
• Rob Torcellini has agreed to pull together a video of all the photos that he will put to music with a voice over to promote aquaponics!

So, this is an ambitious plan that is going to ask for a lot of support from this community to promote aquaponics and help the world know about it's incredible potential for the future of agriculture.

Not a slogan, per se, but I'm working with the USDA "My Plate" thing to calculate how much water the various food choices cost in water. That page will be titled, "How Much Water Do You Eat?"
