Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hi all, brand new to this, so sorry if this is a silly question. We are designing our first system. I have read Sylvia's book (wonderful source) but am still unclear. I have scoured the internet as well. It is very important to us to raise edible fish as well as produce. It appears to me that having a seperate fish tank, not a sump, for your fish is much more successful.

Any thoughts?

Yep, most people. Have the fish in a separate tank. That being said, sump usually just refers to a tank or catch basin of some kind that is the lowest point in a system from which you would pump the water back up to the top, it might have fish or might not. Many systems are built without a designated sump, but they pretty much always have a separate fish tank.

Thanks Bart!

Np, you can google CHOP and CHOP2 aquaponics and you should get lots of ideas on system design.

There are no silly questions. No matter which system you go with I would start with some cheap, hardy, easy to acquire fish like gold fish and go for it. once you've developed your system and you're comfortable with the set up then out your eating fish in.

Well, with gold fish, you gotta be careful. Especially when it comes to feeder goldfish, those guys can introduce all sorts of nasty stuff in your system. Getting your fish from a reputable source is usually a good idea.

Appreciate all the responses!
