I am 4 weeks into fish less cycling and my plants are not growing very well and there is some yellowing.

Readings this AM were as follows:

Temp 80

PH 7.4

NH3 0.5 PPM

Nitrite 5 PPM

Nitrate 20 PPM

Is this normal and am I on track?

Plants want to be around pH of 7.

Looks like a fungus at the stem. Could be feasting on an unhealthy plant.

Not much ammonia for no nitrates.

Either;

  • Need more biomass of fish
  • Need to jump start your biofilter with some bacteria
  • Plants could be consuming all the nitrates your system is making. Shoot for 100 nitrates.

What is the light like?

have approx 100 tilipia fingerlings and 10 or so gold fish.  Its a 300 gal tank and a 4'x8'x12in grow bed. It's located in a 12 x 10 green house with windows on 3 sides. It's attached to my shed. The roof is a series of shy lights so light should not be an issue.  Right now its getting 6-8 hours of sun light.  I have added bacteria before but I will add more.  Any more suggestions to get the nitrates up? I will add something to lower the PH today.  Thanks for the advise and help is much appreciated!!

That's a short day. We like 12 to 16 hrs depending on the plants. Picture looked like it was cool and damp where growing. It isn't really the number of fish, it's the total biomass or weight of the fish.

To convert to nitrogen the bacteria need DO and calcium. A Biofilter can take time to mature. When you see nitrites spike, a couple days later they will go down as they are converted to nitrates that the plants want.

Should I consider grow lights?

How do I add Calcium to this and be fish safe?

Go to Home Depot and ask for Quick Lime. Dissolve small portions in water in bucket and add. Measure by watching your pH.
