Just wondering whats the average size media grow bed is most sought after for an average family? 3,4,5 person household. Length, Height,  Width of it is my question im going to build a bed out of fiberglass and  gelcoat 14inch high, 3ft wide, by 6 or 8 ft long. More or less if you could build the perfect family media grow brow bed what size would it be? Im probably going to run a short run of N.F.T but that nots not the point of the topic. The fish tank ill be using will be an IBC tote or at least around  the 250 gallon range to keep the water fluctuation less .I was also thinking of building the tank also.Just more of a cylinder shape to help water circulate more.(just the IBC tote will be much easier. Anyone in Florida know a place to buy nice tanks? Thanks all.

Hey there,

Usually when you start thinking about growbeds then whilst there are many "stock" sizes out there, perhaps more consideration should be given to certain ratios of fish density, fish feed and so forth.  A "rule of thumb" that is commonly used is that you can have a 1:2 ratio - so if you have a 1000l tank then you could have up to 2000l of growbeds.  This really is just a rule of thumb though and you could use more scientific ratios to get better results.

Here is an example based on you using an IBC for a fish tank, assuming you are using gravel for the beds and a medium stocking density of fish:

If you use these as a guideline then this can tell you how big to make your growbeds.  To make your life easy, then make sure that you can reach across the bed easily - and if you want to consider using Deep Water Culture in the future, then you may want to check out the width of the floating rafts and then build your growbed so that it could easily accommodate those in the future if you decided to switch some of the system to DWC.

Hope this helps.

Perfect size is going to be dependent on the space available and the goals of the system.  If the space is not an issue, the size you mention of 14 inches deep by 3 foot wide by 6 foot long sounds like a good shape to me.  Of course there are already fiberglass beds and tanks being made here in Florida, if you are interested I can put you in contact with the people who make them.

I can get nice blue aquaculture tanks here in FL.

Please Tc names ans numbers would be great. And any prices u know of thanks
