Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

How do you feel about the impending approval of AquaAdvantage Salmon?

The U.S. government just got closer to approving the world's first genetically engineered animal - a fast growing salmon called AquaAdvantage.

Here is the article I just read about the latest on this in the NY Times - http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/22/business/gene-altered-fish-moves-...

I'd love to know what this community thinks about this, especially since we are so tied to the growing of our own food and our own fish,  Personally I'm deeply suspicious of claims of "safety" when it comes to our current inventory of genetically engineered food products, from both their potential impact on human health and their impact on the environment.  Given this, when I read this article and it claims that there will be no impact on the nutritional value or safety of the AquaAdvantage salmon nor any environmental impact, alarm bells are going off in my head.

Anyone else having that reaction?

Ready for more good news? Poor Monsanto. They are so misunderstood.

"So Shankara became one of an estimated 125,000 farmers to take their own life as a result of the ruthless drive to use India as a testing ground for genetically modified crops."

Let me know if I still make you smile.

GMO is definitely "a far cry from selective breeding," it is a huge step forward in scientific technology.  With all new technologies there is amount of trial and error to achieve advancement.  Just because it is a new technology and there are a lot of unknowns involved with its advancement, does that mean that we should thwart progress?  I think not, if man-kind continues down its current path without advancing technology to make us more efficient we will surely ruin the Earth.

Most of the issues that have been brought up in this discussion have little to do with genetically engineered food, "Big Money" manipulating politics for profit,  Environmental problems with current techniques for farming, including fish farming;  Nutritional value of livestock raised on a mono diet of primarily corn and soy, The lack of connection that people have with their food, and the exploitation of the "organic" movement.  Let alone chem-trails and fluoride poisoning, Jim you make me smile.  There are many more problems with our food production than mentioned here and there are many possible solutions.  GMO technology is a solution, although we have not realized  its full potential because it is such a new technology.

As far as Monsanto goes.  They may have done some people wrong, but they have only been trying to protect the billions of dollars they have invested into the research they have done to bring technology forward.    I don't know how I feel about companies being able to patent seeds, but it is the current law and these companies need someway to re-coop their investment into technology.  Espionage has been a huge problem for companies throughout history, and most of the people that have been sued by Monsanto have had intentions of theft despite what they say when interviewed by an independent film crew making a documentary about "Evil Monsanto".  Doesn't it stand to reason that if pro Monsanto publicity is so skewed and manipulated that anti Monsanto publicity would be the same?

There's nothing they are leaving untouched: the mustard, the okra, the bringe oil, the rice, the cauliflower. Once they have established the norm: that seed can be owned as their property, royalties can be collected. We will depend on them for every seed we grow of every crop we grow. If they control seed, they control food, they know it -- it's strategic. It's more powerful than bombs. It's more powerful than guns. This is the best way to control the populations of the world. The story starts in the White House, where Monsanto often got its way by exerting disproportionate influence over policymakers via the "revolving door". One example is Michael Taylor, who worked for Monsanto as an attorney before being appointed as deputy commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991. While at the FDA, the authority that deals with all US food approvals, Taylor made crucial decisions that led to the approval of GE foods and crops. Then he returned to Monsanto, becoming the company's vice president for public policy.

Thanks to these intimate links between Monsanto and government agencies, the US adopted GE foods and crops without proper testing, without consumer labeling and in spite of serious questions hanging over their safety. Not coincidentally, Monsanto supplies 90 percent of the GE seeds used by the US market. Monsanto's long arm stretched so far that, in the early nineties, the US Food and Drugs Agency even ignored warnings of their own scientists, who were cautioning that GE crops could cause negative health effects. Other tactics the company uses to stifle concerns about their products include misleading advertising, bribery and concealing scientific evidence."

Mr Fisk

It is good to see that some people are more aware of what is happening

I have been in the court system for over 4 years .On August 31 2012. I was convicted of illegal aquaculture in the province of

New Brunwick Canada .I did nothing illegal .Even my sentencing is still under a publication ban and this is because it is so political

I did not want to bring politcs to something as unique as this website

but we as neighbors need to pay attention to  the food supply

As one of 36 voting members on the Standards Council of Canada Organic Aquaculture Working Group I learned many things .and it was not about clean food but how words are used to further a product that does not hold to the tenents of

organic

So people need to pay attention

brrrrrrrr its chilly here

PS

these fish are mainly for the us market

Too much doom and gloom for me Jim.  I value your opinion and will agree that evolution is brutal.  I will concede my argument about Monsanto because I see that it is a sore subject. IMO you should look for more positive propaganda, because worrying about all that shit can't be healthy.  I know the World is full of vile people and practice, but I choose to focus on the positive that I see.  Time to go feed the fish and chickens!  Have a good day and try to smile, it's not all bad, man!

Are you kidding Roger? We are some of the happiest people you will ever know. Just like to keep those things in perspective. We have the happiest little farm around with sheep, chickens, a hinny, cats, dogs, and now fish. Thing is WE know how to take care of ourselves. Just want to keep those SOBs out of OUR lives. Libertarians we and freedom requires staying educated. Just want to see them coming and in order to do that you have to know what they look like and who is giving them a leg up!

Right Tilly?

Cheers

Hey Tilly, how chilly? 15F here last night,

So sorry for what you are going thru. Why we live way out in the mtns as far away from bureaucrats as possible. Want to build a house? Septic and elect. permits ONLY. Most people can't even imagine that.

They try to pull that crap here and they won't even know what hit them. But it is only a matter of time unless we can wake up the Zombies all around us. Freedom ain't free.

I gotta go and get some more fish sweaters cause i have not been able to teach my fish how to make a igloo

I think it is a learning curve just not sure if its the fish or me lol

Why on Earth anybody would be so "suspicious" or all "doom and gloom" is beyond me? I mean, just look at all the great things GMO's have done for us so far...I mean it's all been going so well. From honey bees to Monarch butterflies. More herbicides are being sold than ever before (so that has to be great for the 'economy')...Super herbicide resistant weeds seem to be cropping up almost weekly, new resistant varieties of pests too (and you know what they say..."variety is the spice of Life...it's really a wonderful boon for lovers of evolution everywhere). And America, (the wonderful place that got the ball rolling) has to have one of the healthiest populations of any country, anywhere. What's a little glyphosate in the blood anyways? Obese? Naw, there's just "more of us to love"...

And for the 'small' number of folks thus far, who are having health issues (as an indirect result of GM foods...meaning more pesticides/herbicides sprayed and all that comes with that...because we all know that GM foods themselves are perfectly safe... after all the corporation(s) said so themselves...and when has any corporation LIED, or done something like put their profits before the good of us all? Hmm...? I mean really...)...well, those people, just like the 'super weeds' will just have to evolve/adapt in order to survive. And if those enervated weaklings can't take a bit of glyphosate in the blood, or a little of Bt toxin in the gut...then "fuck 'em". They're getting in the way of progress. (Just a little collateral damage in the God-given and legally protected right to peruse higher corporate profit margins).

What he said

Thanks Vlad. Sometimes we feel so all alone. People are so busy making a living that they really have no idea what is going on all around them. "Head in the sand" is so much easier. Right up until it bites THEM in the ass. If we don't hang together we will surely hang alone.
