Hello!
I'd
like to raise fish for personal use and consumption in a closed loop
tank. What are the kinds of fish I am allowed to have and do I need any
sort of permit from the DFG? Total fish will be less than 100. I live in Santa Clara County.
Thanks for your time.
Hello Chi,
Aquaponics, a closed loop system
to raise fish and vegetables is a popular system. If you sell any ofyour fish for human consumption, you will need to become a registered
aquaculturist. The application is available through Lori (cc:'d on this
email). If the fish will not sell your fish and they will not leave
your property and are only for consumption by your family, then you do
not need a permit to conduct aquaponics.
The fish you choose is important. For example, you may not raise tilapia in Northern California. I suggest you talk with your regional fisheries biologist to discuss appropriate fish species. You can call 707-944-5500 to talk with a biologist.
