I removed the roof of my GH to replace the plastic and while it was off a storm came through and shorted the power out. Everything looked OK at first but the next morning I had fish floating. I tested the water and found nitrites off the scale. Since I didn't have enough dechlorinated water on hand I set up a large quarantine tank and transferred about 50 fish just in case. There were still hundreds left in the FT but I didn't have a way to filter water for that many fish. The next day all of the remaining fish were still alive and the nitrites were back to normal so I put the quarantined fish back in the FT. I'm guessing that the loss of oxygen for just a few hours was enough to kill some of the fish. I lost about 20lbs. of Tilapia. My plan now is to set up a backup power source and to hook the water and air pumps up to 2 separate circuits so I won't loose both at once.
