Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Just curious if there is anyone out there that has a Hyper-Saline (high salt) AP system?  I saw that there was a researcher at UC Davis that was hybridizing vegetables that have higher salt tolerance, sent an email and had no response back.

Thanks

There are some useful veggie plants that will handle higher levels of salt but not to the extent that it will let you grow saltwater fish in aquaponics (unless your veggies run very much to the seaweed and algae type of plants.)

Yeah I know that I could grow Caulerpa, Sargassum, Mongroves and a host of other marine plants/algae, just hoping for a more recognizable type of veggie.  This study had tomatoes fruiting in 1.015 Specific Gravity as well as some grasses.  Not so interested in the grasses but tomatoes at saltier that brackish is pretty awesome!  If I can find that study I'll post it so you can see.

Tomatoes I've heard will take on a saltier taste when grown in a salted system.  However I don't think we are talking seawater but rather between 6-10 ppt.

Beets and purslane are also fairly salt tolerant.  Salt bush.

But again, not for sea water.

Cool.  A recirculating salt water system has been on my mind.  This may help.

I would think that tomatoes with a saltier taste would be great!  Pre-seasoned!!! All joking aside, thanks for the info everyone.

Now if we could only grow bacon...not pigs..but bacon

Oh no Chi, I don't want any franken fish with pork bellys or totally freeked out tomato plants growing pork bellys.

Mmmmmmm BLT fresh from the garden.

However, why not keep a pig?

Pig turds stink

I hear you can teach them to use a toilet.
