I have a 27 food diameter artificial pond and a 1500 gal tank collecting rain water. The pond has no fish and is not aerated but can be via a waterfall/stream bed and 4000 gal/hr pump.

The pond has some bottom algae build-up that I would line to 'digest' using a red worms in a circulating water flow system. I was wondering if there would be enough nutrients in the filtration water system to support plant growth? I was thinking of growing strawberries for starter. After the pond gets cleaned up I might consider adding fish to the system but I want to start out small and see if it is worth the cost and effort to expand.

The 1500 gal rain collection tank is mostly used for drip irrigation of a conventional garden but is also used to start-up the waterfall/pond flow and recover the excess water when it is shut down. The start-up process takes about 200 gallons. The pond is about 27 foot in diameter and about 4 foot deep with a 16-18 inch shelf along the perimeter.

I would appreciate any comments about using a nutrient rich pond without fish for growing plants in soil-less media

Thanks

Aquaponics without fish

I have an artificial pond/waterfall that does not currently have fish but does have algae.  I would like to install a red worm filtration bed to remove the organic buildup in the pond and, if possible run some of the water through strawberry towers and thereby reduce the nutrient content.  Is it possible, in this situation, to grow plants without introducing fish into the pond?  There is a lot of organic build-up from leaf loading so I could feed the red worms for quite some time.…
