Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I am moving to the Bay area in May and unfortunately cannot take this system with me as I'm moving into a shared house. It's footprint is roughly 4' x 15' and is made from (2) 275 gallon IBC totes.

This was designed and built after researching AP for over a year and taking a 4-day intensive on commercial aquaponics with applied permaculture. The course was taught by Max Meyers of Norcal AP and using his time tested formulas and ratios, I built the system with very minimal excess parts purchased. The water flow through the system also works as designed and doesn’t move too fast or too slow, there is even pressure and water levels.

The system was built in August of 2012 over a two-week period and has been operating with no mechanical issues for 7 months continuously. It would benefit from the design being completed, as the top bed is supposed to be filled with media. I would recommend lava rock for this design, as it is also inexpensive.

The water and air pumps are running 24/7 and only pulling 130 watts of electricity. The air pump can even be turned off during daylight hours when the system isn’t completely filled with plants. There is considerable oxygenation occurring from the natural gravity drop from each bed into the next. At approximately 100 kwh per month maximum, this system costs at most $15 in electricity to run.

Sylvia’s all organic 5 lb feed was purchased and there is about half left. The Hagan Nutrafin Master Test Kit (10 test) that comes with the system is in perfect condition and hasn’t been used more than 15 times.

Asking $1500 to re-coup slightly less than the cost to build the system, which was conservatively $1650. I have an excel that shows what stores I spent these funds at but unfortunately I did not itemize it along the way.

There have been additional costs in maintaining and improving the system. I am also willing to cover the cost of transportation and will help set it back up. I am also including a 10'x20' hoop house frame that leans up against the side of the house (L Shaped). This was an additional $150-200 in materials.

I am open to offers as I need to sell the system before May before re-locating to the Bay area. If you know anyone who may be interested, I would definitely appreciate you passing this info along. It is easiest to reach at Adam.Kliegman@gmail.com or my cell, 516-404-6914. Thanks!!
