I recently moved to a 4 acre farm in New Richmond, OH.  My wife and I are building a much larger system than my last.  Here is my blog if you want to check on our progress.  I will be building the fish house in the barn this winter so we won't have any production until next year.  http://greencuisineaquaponics.blogspot.com/

Greetings,

How many here are gearing up their indoor system for the winter?

I am doing just that. My Mints and parsley survived the initial frosts We had, So I am going to add grow beds for them in my indoor system. The 3 Gold Fish that were outside seem very happy to back in the warmer water indoors too ! lol

I was amazed at the results of My 1 st outdoor season. 3 med sized gold fish did an amazing job outside. I enjoyed tomatoes galore, Mint for Tea, even some ferns and aloe vera in the mix. The strawberry plant was at end of it's season when i bought it, it is inside now, looking forward to eating  them.

Hello.  Can I join your group?  I successfully operated a hybrid 12'x28' system in my backyard for 1 year.  We purchased 4 acres in New Richmond, Ohio and are starting a commercial operation.  My wife and I received our 30'x96' gothic hightunnel kit from Farmtek on Friday.  We will begin building our system in a week or so.  We took a 4-day course at Green Acre Aquaponics in Florida last year.  There is a training program July 10 and 11 that we may go to at OSU http://go.osu.edu/ABCaquaponicsworkshop

I use a narrow spectrum LED called Diamond Series from advancedledlights.com.

Thanks David. I put out a call to the guy who owns Kind LED which are sopposed to be top of the line full spectrum LED lights, and he advised me LEDs are best for fruiting plants, but T5 are what he recommended for leafy plants like lettuces and herbs. With that new information I think, like you I'm going to try both and see what happens.

I grow exclusively indoors, on a small scale, both hydroponics and a small aquaponics system.  I have used both an expensive LED grow light as well as T5 fluorescents.  It seems that many forums conclude that LED is not worth the cost, but I was very happy with growing cilantro and basil with the LED.  I'm not sure if it was my imagination, but it seems that the T5 lights attracted more bugs.  The LED-grown plants seemed to have very rich color. I'm still rather amateur in this, but those are my thoughts.

Is anyone growing exclusively indoors and what lights do you recommend? I'm looking to grow lettuce, herbs, tomatoes and peppers, and I've been looking into LED lights as they seem to be the most efficient, but come with a pretty hefty price tag.
