Best drain cleaner I've ever used is Sodium Hydroxide. Bought some by accident when I was ordering Potassium Hydroxide so I tried it on y bath tub drain which hasn't drained right for years. Cleaned it out completely and it has remained clean for months now.

A professor in Thailand actually worked on this. I had all of it saved on my Ipad, now I'm having a hard time finding the exact sites again, but here is one of the sites that explains it;

Ah! Here is it; this is the site I first found. I have three containers already fermenting. This is an awesome idea, and I am hoping for the enzyme to become an organic insecticide for the garden. Not to mention using it to clean toilet, and unplug drain pipes.

(i'm also heavily into Moringa growing and using)

Garbage enzymes? Nope not familiar with them. Looking forward to learning more

Regarding STEM, construction on the aquaponic learning lab classroom is coming along well. Great thanks to our partner the Roosevelt School District for the bench tables and to Mark Bogart for his great skills in construction and system design. Just right. Here is the background story on the project from the Cronkite news service: http://bit.ly/1wuDCgR

Thanks for the offers Matt and Jeff.

I'll help you build a manifold for the 1/2 drip line like mine if you are interested Matt

Where are you guys getting your greenhouse sheeting?  I may go for some of the long plastic panels I've seen at home despot, we'll see how the money calculations work out.

Thanks for the offer on the design Jeff.  I'm just going to use the 10'x20' car cover frame and extend it a few feet to fit my needs.

oh, and here are some pics of some peppers I just picked - now that the weather has cooled my tomatoes are taking off as well as the peppers.

Hey Jim, if you need assistance just let me know.  I took down my shade cloth last weekend, and need to build a solar water heater - got the pump just need a good design so I may ask for assistance on that.  I'm debating on putting up greenhouse material but will probably need to, thinking of just covering the growbeds directly instead of using the pvc hoop house I have as that would be more material.  Got the heater that I used last year still and will use again when it starts getting cold

Jim,

I just built a 8'x22' GH with 2x4s and 6 mil plastic. Last year I built one 8x10 and had no problem with it holding up. You can do the frame and plastic for about $200 (no floor) and can do it in a day with 2 people. I have a Sketchup drawing of it if you're interested.

Nice work Scott!

Arlene: garbage enzymes are commonly called "worm tea" around here, they are a wonderful addition to you system

Hi John:  Yes, colder, the fish did not rush up to meet me yesterday, the fall temps are on the way.  Time to clean up the solar heater and finish the insulation project from last winter.  Must finish the 2" of Styrofoam skirting around the jacuzzis and fashion lids to hold the heat in.

I am also considering converting an old portable 10x 20 car garage into a green house over the jacuzzi system. any thoughts out there?  The tomato plants are covered with blossoms right now so it looks like a bumper crop and I don't want an early frost to get them.

happy gardening,

Jim

I am in Michigan and have my IBCs in a GH but still wrap them in 1" Styrofoam sheets to help lower electric cost. The FT needs to be around 76 and I'm not heating the GH to that level. I've seen some neat PVC hoop houses on YouTube that would help protect an IBC during cold weather as well.

Has anyone heard of the concept of "garbage enzymes" ( especially Dr. brooks, since this would also be a great teaching project for kids, schools, and STEM PROJECTS)? I ask, because the finished enzyme product when diluted properly, acts as organic pesticide, and I am plagued by those darned leaf miners and other bugs. Or , as a second question, has anyone found a good method to control the pests that eat the leaves of my squash, beans, tomato and pumpkin plants?

I just added a heater to the tank outside. I also wonder, do any here in Phoenix have their IBCs outside, and how will you protect themfromthe soon cold weather? This will be my first winter.
