Anthony P., Uniseal is a brand name so if your seal says Uniseal on it that's what it is. I really like them and even use them in place of bulkhead connectors (of course I make sure if there is a leak it leaks into a tank). So far no leaks. This page has drill sizes: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/catalog/product/view/id/2011/

I have a 75 gallon home for geriatric feeders and those ones you pay $14 to win for your kids at the carnival. If you quarantine them in a 10Gal with plenty of air, a simple filter, and water from the target tank for a week or so, you can see if you batch has a problem. If you hit a disease issue, you can attempt to treat them or just use them to feed whatever you bought them for. My survivors have outlasted our aquatic turtle, and now are destined to be aquaponic pioneers.

two things:

I've had great success with feeder goldfish and shubunkin.  THey are both messy fish so cleaning up fish waste is more work.  I know several people who have bought blue gil (some of which I have inherited) and you only need to buy from someone who has a license is my understanding.  I would check your local craigslist or go online to find someone close to you.

I think it's good to start with feeder goldfish (here .15/each) so if you lose a lot it isn't a big loss.  Mine got so big I had to rehome them.  Too many fish for my bio filter.

PS I have abused my goldfish and shubunkin with water temp, pH, ammonia that was not great.  Some times things happen.  I find them all to be very resilient.  Having a large fish tank really helps with these fluctuations.

I have no idea where to get a permit for fish, or where to buy them locally.

Are all uniseals equal? Do you drill the same size holes from brand to brand like 2 1/2 for a 11/2 seal and so on? I have ordered seals and I have a few days to wait so I want to drill and cut pipe and move forward while I wait.

We've had pretty good luck with our goldfish from the pet store. They weren't feeders though. We've got about 20 shubunkins (calico) and comets (regular) now that were initially bought to decorate the backyard pond. They do make pretty decorations, but they do a nice job fertilizing lettuce and peas during the winter too. Some have been with us for four or five years now.

IMHO it is OK to purchase fish from the pet store just don't count on them to survive for long - especially feeder goldfish.  Ornimental fish such as angelfish, zebrafish and Oscars and such sold as "Pet" fish do alright in an established aquarium, indoors, where the temps do not fluctuate very much.

I went through 30 feeder goldfish and in the end after two years, I ended up with 5.  These were the strongest of all and were starting to come into breeding age until a racoon got them - bummer

We pay $37.50 for a type 2 fish permit annually and it is worth it to purchase Yellow Perch at $60. per 100 fish 3 - 4".  same price for bluegills, hybrid BG's, and a few dollars more for walleye, saugar, and trout (same size).

Is it okay to buy fish from the pet store?

A little planning would have saved me much money!

I had some time a couple of weekends ago and started building my grow beds. I went to the home store and ended up buying bulk head fittings for about $20 each. the web site above has a unit close to the one I have for $7-10 each plus shipping.  Still would have saved much money and time.

How long have you been cycling the GB? May not need too many fish to start. What's your tank size?
