John-

Welcome to the group, read through the past posts and do your research.  There are a few different design setups for aquaponics and they all have their benefits and drawbacks.  To see what others are doing, click on the avitar (personal pic) that accompanies every post.  Mine is the bear on the top left.  This will bring you to their personal page where you can view the picks that they post.  Enjoy the great info here and post any question you may have.  Someone will answer your question.  Word of caution, aquaponics is habit forming...YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, enjoy

Hello to all in Aquaponics for Beginners. I have just become both a subscriber to The Aquaponic Gardening Community and this group. There is no aquaponic setup at my home right now but I am investigating, learning and trying to figure out the best route for setting one up. Any advice, personal experiences or other help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry for your loss. I lost about 25 fry to a filter incident a few weeks ago. Having a few hundred more didn't make it any better.

Sad Day.  I had my first fish death today.  One of my smaller tilapia got itself wedged in the bridge syphon.  I noticed that the sump was running lower than it should and the pump sounded funny this morning but I didn't have time to dismantle it until I got home this evening.  Not sure how long it was in there (couldn't have been more than 16 hours)  but the fishy was gone.

Luckily I think all of the rest of the fish are now too big to fit through so hopefully there won't be any repeats

HI all. I am from the island of Puerto Rico and I grow hydroponics, aeroponics  and  worked at a facility here in the island dedicated on fish and their values as food . The place was close and I have a ton of things to share. Hope I can be of help as well as get some help and knowledge from you all here. I have put togheter some very nice systems Using a combination of aqua and hydro systems and know how. To much talking so let me get working. See you all soon.

You don't even have to give up the old aquarium filter, you can still use it if your system seems to need it.  If your grow bed is big enough then you probably wouldn't need to keep the aquraium filter running but if your grow bed is tiny and your fish load is fairly big, then you might want to keep the regular aquarium filter online till you expand the grow beds.

Austin, sorry I wasn't totally clear. Of course you'll need to maintain a temp that is suitable for your fish. I'm in Mich. and my GH is around 60 most of the time in winter but does get warmer on sunny days. I have tomato, green pepper, and squash plants growing but not producing. Just using them to cycle the water for the fish right now. In the summer I'll deal with learning to grow the veggies. Just pick a plant that doesn't require warm temps and let the water cycle until the water is good.

Anyone try minnows in your setups?

Jim, I watched a video about trout that said they needed a lot of water flow and high aeration.  How are you set up?  I have considered trout, but being in Florida they would require a lot of water chilling.  I think they might sell well though considering there would not be much competition.

Goldfish are great for starters Gillian. I had some trouble keeping trout alive for more than a few months in my small tank, but the goldfish have been with us for three years now. On the other hand, we did end up with a few trout that were ready for the frying pan after four or five months. The goldfish are still a bit on the small side.
