Yay! I am so excited, my husband just scored 4 barrels and an IBC tote for free from one of his growers! I know that I will now be putting off things that I should be doing while dreaming up a design of what to do with them!

Thanks for the clarification on the green tomato.

TC-

You are correct that green tomatoes will make you feel sick if they are raw.  Cooking them destroyes the compound that does this and makes them safe to eat

Linda-

I tried to send you the pie recipe off line but it wouldn't let me until I befriended you so until you accept, I'll have the recipe ready to send.

Oh NO I was not recommending green tomato for green smoothy drinks.  It was really a more general idea for those who need to quickly preserve other produce and don't have the time to do the blanching etc normally recommended for saving frozen foods.  Since for smoothy drinks the texture of the finished product is going to come out about the same no matter what prep you do before freezing the fruit and veggies you can save time by simply chucking it in the bag and freezing it.

As to green tomato, I think those need to be cooked to be safe to eat.

Leo, send on the recipes.  I tried green fried tomatoes once and didn't think what I made was what it should look or taste like.  I do make green smoothies but have never thought to add green tomatoes.

I'll try it, I think.  No stomach ache???

Brigitte - I tried trout twice. I think they are great fun at feeding time and some grew very fast. They are also delicious. But with a single small system, I had problems with them. I started with 25 fish the first time. I had three fish that reached about 1 lb after 4 months, but we lost 12 early to various causes and the other 9 were under 3/4 lb when I harvested the fish. I read that in a small environment, trout tend to be aggressive with each other and take longer to grow because they are fighting or chasing each other. I would not recommend them for a small system. Trout also prefer water temps closer to 60 F, although I'd guess most AP systems growing them have water temps in the mid 60s.Even though my system was indoors, keeping the water cool was a challenge. The second batch all croaked for unknown reasons after four weeks where things seemed to be going swimmingly. I haven't managed to kill the perch yet, so they are the clear winner at this point.

TCLynx good idea on the smoothies!

Thank you so much for the info! Yes, Tilapia were just what we thought we should do as beginners due to what Silvia's book said, but if the local fish are just as easy and more cost effective due to temperature I am on board with that for sure. I know that they would also be easier to get out here. How about trout? I am not so concerned about how long they take to grow out as I am sure that the next year we will be on quite the learning curve so harvesting fish won't be on the priority list for a while. Keith that is so sweet of you! How do you grow the cray fish and how do you feed it to the perch and bluegill? We would love to see your set up sometime.

Tip, if you make green smoothy drinks, you can freeze just about any produce for use later in the drinks.

A lot of people get sad when the season comes to an end, no more fresh produce.  I have always enjoyed fried green tomatoes and sweet green tomato pie.  I look forward to the first frost even though my growing has come to an end and my backyard system has to be taken down until spring.  I bring my fish indoors and into my aquarium system and grow herbs through the winter.  But I harvest all the green tomatoes that are close to breaking (going from green to ripening) and the others that are too young to break, I make sweet green tomato pies and fried green tomatoes along with chutney.  Keeps me satisified.  If any is interested, I'll be pleased to send the pie recipe.
