Can tilapia eat each other?

spider mites will be very small, like little dots unless you use a magnifying glass.

Yes earthworms are good but you want to make sure you are getting them from a source that doesn't feed them fresh manure since you want to avoid contaminating your system with possible pathogens from fresh warm blooded animal manure.

Bob-

I have two different design systems in my yard, one utalizes the bell siphon with media bed, flood and drain, bell siphon and the other is a NFT timed set-up.  For the past four years the bell siphon has never given me difficulties except to do monthly maintanance to the filter.  The NFT set-up has already broken down and I have had to replace the pump due to burn-out.  IMHO, the timed set-up burns the pump out much quicker that the constant on design of the F/D Bell siphon.  As with everything, maintanance must always be done.  With a system that is properly balanced, minor maintanance must be performed.  All the neysayers can say all they want, for me, the F/D bell siphon is my choice so-much-so. I am installing a 14 IBC set-up in a heated barn.

Lucinda-

An IBC tote can be used in many configurations.  A grow bed and fish tank combo, a FT and sump piped to a manufactured or DIY grow bed with media or used as a floating raft system.  Personally if it is to be in your sun-room, the media will act as a heat sink and you may be constantly be concerned with very warm water so the fish choice may be a bit difficult.  For instance trout may be affected by the heat but tilapia will not.  Cat fish need a constant 75° to 80°F water so in the winter you may need tank heaters to maintain the heat.  I personally don't like the taste of tilapia so I utilize fish that are found in the wild of my state or naturalized fish.  Think of the type system that will fit into your space and go with that.  Research and read needs to be your mantra when deciding what system will be your best

Leo-  I liked the opinion shared by bob, but to be absolutely thorough with my due diligence, I would like to hear your opinion/ experience on Bell Siphons as well.. Have you encountered some of the same challenges that Bob was referencing utilizing a Bell system?

Bob-  where did u get your design for a "Timed Flood and Drain"system? (and thanks for your opinion on bell siphones.. I'm grateful to be going to school on your experience before I find out for myself with trial and error).. Also, I have 3 grow tanks.. can I set up a timed flood and drain system to work simultaneously with all three, or do you do it one at a time? (I'm completely green when it comes to this system.. I'm going to do my research today, but I appreciate any direction you can send me to expedite my research efforts)... thanks again

Hello Everyone, I am  bran new to the world of aquaponics. I just bought a IBC tank. Wanting to know what is the best system with the tank. What kind of fish would work with it as well. The tank will be in my sunroom . Which is south facing. It does get quite warm this time of year, and there is ventilation for the room. During the winter it is heated. I live in upstate NY. I plan to have things up and running by Sept. Would love all input. Thanks

Nick-

There is a lot of info on the Internet pertaining to the bell siphon.  Google Afnan bell siphon, IBC aquaponics and there is a IBC group on here that you can join if you are not already a member.  Another one that comes to mind is Murrey Hallum aquaponics, sorry I don't remember the exact address but just google Murrey Hallum and it should come up.  MAybe others on this group would have more success and remembering his address.
