Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I saw a raft set up in China that grow Malaysian prawn underneath their deep water rafts. So I'm interested to know if anyone is growing Australian Red claw or Malaysian prawns in their system that way?

Thanks Rodolfo, I found a different thread on here about it, but it was in a different place...

I have found other info on the subject with the pros and the difficulties with Malaysian Prawn farming...

Not many success stories in commercialization, unless you have huge areas and cheap labor with close market points...

I am currently building a tank/dwc raft bed for prawn. So this information is not from experience but lots of reading. I do not believe that the prawns will damage the living root systems. They will feast on the dead roots however. I have read that they do enjoy hiding in the root systems if they are large enough. Not sure if this causes any damage but it apparently is not enough to cause a noticeable problems.

Interesting.

Just as a supplemental question and info of some..

http://www.miami-aquaculture.com/sm%20scale%20macrobra.htm

This site has some very good info about aquaculture farming, they highlight the space needed for maturing Malaysian Prawn above 5cm.

Q. Has anyone used this company for stock of fish or prawns?

Any feed back about them would be helpful, they say they ship live stock internationally too....

I have not tried this myself to verify the effectiveness of the technique, but I have heard that if you put them in a constant flow system that is fast water that they hang onto the screens.

You are right. I do believe that they only eat dead roots. Once I used to raise a few prawns in the toughs. Amazingly, I saw only white roots.

I did my doctorate on Mac's egg to plate potential in Arizona and have grown them in raft aquaponics. Interesting animals with great potential.

Can you share with us some more info on your findings Dr George?

Excuse me what is K.I.S.S.? Could you elaborate please?

The UVI people recommended that better don't play with the biomass.
Remember...K.I.S.S.

Greetings. @Chandra. K.I.S.S. = Keep it Super Simple (there are other versions though ;-))

@Stuart. There are 1,000  & 1 things that I could say about M. rosenbergii in this circumstance. However that would just be rambling. Glad to answer or give my opinion on any specific issues or questions you might have through ;-)

Cool thanks Dr G.

As talked about before... space.  What space allocation would you recommend for the Malaysian prawn in raft systems?

Is it best to isolate the tank to just male or females? which grow best?

Is it easier to breed is separate smaller tanks? Any other specific's needed for breeding? (water temp change, light change, hide holes, change of food)

What is the best way to travel live shrimp (and what size) from the USA to the Dominican Republic, if I'm unable to find them here?

Any additional water treatments needed?

that will do for now... I'm sure others will jump in with more and will look forward to your reply...
