okay... what is a ground cloth for?

Comment by John E Windsor on June 27, 2012 at 6:45pm
Marty, I've used metal coat hanger for years and never had a problem. Just cut the top of the hanger back a couple of inches on both sides of the hook, then cut the bottom in half. That way you get two staples per hanger. I space them +/- 16" apart around the edges and overlaps. If at an edge you expect a lot of foot traffic, I would put one every foot. Make sure your ground cloth is squared up and tight.
We live in central Fla too. I know what you mean about sand.

Marty, the place you are ordering the ground cloth from probably has a recommendation about staple spacing.  I've heard that the ones that rust actually hold the cloth down better.

I believe Lowes and home depot around my area both carry Thuricide which is a liquid bacillus thuringiensis product.

Or there is Dipel Dust

Thanks for the help, I'll try the tea first. Now where would I get some Bacillus Thuringiensis? And again thank you everybody for the help

Bacillus Thuringiensis products can be used around aquaponics.  (This includes thuricide and dipel dust the ones that work against leaf eating caterpillars)  Bacillus Thuringiensis only works against certain caterpillar pests but it is especially good to use when leaf eating caterpillars are your problem.

In addition to the diatomaceous earth, you can try a "tea" of any or all of these: garlic, cayenne, cinnamon. Strain it to make certain it'll go through the sprayer, and spray it on the leaves.

Neem oil is good in a soil garden, but if you use it in AP you have to be very careful not to get the media because, being an oil, it can mess things up.

You can buy worm compost and make a tea from it, which is probably the most effective. Or raise worms for your system and use your own compost (that won't help you right now, though.)

If the worms are large enough, pick them off & give them to the fish, if your fish are  carnivorous or omnivorous.

Diatomaceous earth "food grade" will work
