Honestly I havent really been able to update my grow bed to anything bigger and its only six inches deep. So the kale was growing good for a while but couldnt really hold itself up after it got to like 8 inches tall. I do know that kale generally likes colder weather and in North Carolina most people grow it closer to winter time. Other than that everything has been growing fine but a good thing to consider is that you take in all the advice you want and the only real way of knowing how to grow certain crops is by experience.

Hey Marc,  I am trying to grow kale as well, but my system can't seem to sustain it.  Basil, swiss chard, tomatoes (veg not fruit yet), and lettuce all grow fine.  Kale and spinach are a no go... how is yours growing?

Thanks I had to do a lot with very little and make it look nice so my girlfriend wouldn't hate it. I cant take all the credit though because my inspiration came from this system http://aquaponicscommunity.com/photo/finished-indoor-unit-5310?cont.... Thanks a lot though.

Marc,

Nice job.  I like that you didn't spend a fortune on it too.  I appreciate your struggle to make something functional out of plumbing parts while still keeping it looking nice.  It's a nice little system and a good inspiration for other beginners.  -Elizabeth
