Now that I've migrated from T5's to HID's, I'm wondering how far above the plants these beasts should be. I'm running a 1000w MH dialled back to 75% above my 5x5 raised bed, with lettuce, kale and…Continue

Seems I can get a timer to hang together for more than ten cycles when firing up my MH's. Should I be using a relay of some sort? Any ideas?Continue

Ive been reading about the great growth you can get from blue led lighting, can you tell me some products that give bright light output?

Shawn,

I would say you will get better results from the MH over CFLs, but the price in terms of energy usage is the main drawback from that. The quality will most likely be seen in the amount of hours that the bulbs last. Good vs. bad 400W bulbs for early growth wont show much difference. And for seed starting 400W is way overkill IMO. I start with 1- 22W T5 and that's it for the first 2 weeks

For starting seeds and early vegetative growth..... 400W metal halide or 4, 96W compact florescent bulbs? And how much of a factor is the quality of the bulbs? I have access to many metal halide bulbs that were used in an aquarium or should I suck it up and buy expensive Hortilux?

The only comparison video I found in the past showed good results. However plasma is uber expensive for what you get >./p>

http://plasmagrowlighting.net/Chameleon_Grow_Systems/Products.html $1200/$2200/$6700 for a 4'x4' area 0_0

Just goto youtube and type plasma vs hps you will find several grows

just watched video on comparison of plasma and hps

wondering why anyone would do a comparison using coleus with hps

coleus does far better under metal halide than hps

coleus flowers are not usually the intent of growing this plant ,the colorfull leaves is what sells the plant .

a better comparison would be to use mh x plasma

I must say that since I live in Florida, there is little reason for me to grow much indoors under lights but I'm glad to now have a place to send people when they start asking lighting questions.
