Hey Natalie.. was just reading about your journeys with Tilapia.. was wondering if you ever found someone in ontario that sells Tialpia Fingerlings.. let me know..
Hi Natalie. I was in contact with Ministère de l`Agriculture, des Pêcjeroes et de l`Alimentation. It turns out that I live about 30km from someone who breeds perch, but between us is a Zone change so they are off limits to me. I was also told that if I were to persue this matter I might be given the go ahead anyway seeing as how the system is closed and not near any water sources... I just lack the time to sit and write letters to gouvernment MRNF.
Another fish i was permitted to grow is Doré.(not sure the name in English) But they require cooler water again
Interesting about keeping the reciepts at your end making everything ok.
I'm afraid I'm only just getting started here, actually not quite even there yet. We just moved to a new house this past June and I've yet to get completely settled. Some renos had to get done before anything else. I'm planning to start a small setup in my basement for the fall/winter, and/or maybe in the garage. Not too sure what the temps are going to be in the garage yet though...
Alot of what i've been picking up so far are just off the shelf components from home depot/canadaian tire/etc. As I find suppliers for the more specific components(fish, grow media, etc) i'll post details. :)
Hi Natalie. I`m not sure if i can help much. I just started a barrel system this summer but got pretty discouraged after I found out the only fish i could grow legally was rainbow trout. The trouble is the cool water temp they require. So now, I`ve got my system working with some minows we caught from our pond.
There is Bruce Swift of Swift aquaculture in Agassiz, he raises coho and watercress. I think also crayfish and wasabi. http://www.edible-britishcolumbia.com/amuse-bouche-food-blog/general-comments/swift-aquaculture-in-agassiz/
Not sure of the current state of his business.
Hero Invincible Bio Aqua Farm , 21422 4th Ave. in Langley BC does tilapia, I know they were interested in aquaponics but I do not believe they are that far along yet.
I wouldn't want to lead anyone astray, these are just a few who come to mind as possibilities.
I can certainly add more if I think of some or there are any new developments.
