Aquaponics as an Energy Source

Aha!  I prbably got lots of you with that title!  Hehe.  You are probably wondering what in the world I am talking about.  I know it is a bit deceiving, but its what came to mind as I wanted to blog some more about my aquaponics experience.  Aquaponics has certainly been a personal energy source for me, hence the title.  Lately, I sleep little and talk a mile a minute.  Its like a caffiene rush after drinking 13 RedBulls but without the jitters.  Not that I have ever drank 13…

New Fish!

I have purchased 30 new community fish. The fish are floating in their store baggies as I write. I decided to stick with inexpensive fish until I can prove my worth as an aquaponicist. This time I bought the fish from a different store than the previous ones. The 30 fish are a mix of red minnows as well as small and medium comet goldfish. I think this is a good choice for me as a hobbyist. The goldfish seemed to not be the best fit for my system until I re-evaluated the cost of typical…

How I Made My Fish Happy

It is uncanny that on a day that I set about to make my fish happier that the thing about PETA should come up.  I thought I would add to the comments on the PETA forum but I don't want to give them the time of day.  I want to talk about my fish.  We have all this about plants, pictures of how well our vegetables are doing and very little about the fish.  I love my fish and I have a desire for them to be comfortable and normal as I said once before.  If you saw my video on Matt's Miracle you…

No Go

Well after all the work put fourth I'm sad to announce the school doesn't want to move forward with the program at this time. At least I was able to open their eyes to what can be done at the school.

Steady but Slow

Things have been going well in the system. I have had a few more fish deaths. The fish all appear to seem fine when i observe them in the tank. In the last week I have found a floating fish every other morning when I do my first daily check and feed. I am not sure what is going on but I see that the gold fish may not be hardy enough. It is apparent. My water quality has seemed to stay stable. I have not noticed an increase in ammonia, nitrite or nitrate and my pH is stable somewhere between…

More thoughts on where this is all going

For the last couple of contributions, especially around commercial aquaponics and the formation of aquaponic associations / professional bodies, I suddenly found myself a little bit on the antagonistic side of the debate.  Now even though I may have never been the world’s greatest optimist (a pessimist is right most of the time, and is pleasantly surprised at being wrong, after all), I think there is much more to my train of thought than…

Vermiponics anyone?

Does anyone have any experience or info on having a worm only operation? Since this is an aquaponic forum, wasn't sure if this was ok to blog here. I'm entertaining the idea of keeping my fish density very low, but having a lot more worms in the flood and drain that we are incorporating. Another place I could add the worms are in the large bottom pots of the vertical towers. I've noticed the strawberries and some other plants on the bottom didn't produce as well.
