There are a couple of greenhouse systems that are in planning in my neighborhood here outside of Stockton (my own included). These will figure in the overall design of built-on greenhouses that will integrate food production with daily living, as well as add passive solar heating.
We do have a neighbor west of town who has set up a system in a small free-standing greenhouse that has been running for a year. They are upgrading to larger tank and grow beds right now, but they might be interested in a field trip.
We're all homeschoolers too!
I just wanted to say this is a great opportunity to integrate this in to your curriculum. While you are learning your children can learn at the same time and get hands on experience in all their subjects. I think using a thematic approach is a great from time to time. My son did a science fair project on aquaponics around 2003 and won second place. He really enjoyed the project. (I home schooled my kids also). By the way if you wanted to carpool to West Plains that offer is for your family also. I had not looked at your profile and you mentioned homeschooling… Here is a link that features S&S aqua farm and systems also http://www.scribd.com/doc/34478163/Aquaponics-Integration-of-Hydroponics-with-Aquaculture
The only one that I know of that has a system running is
S & S AQUA FARM
407 Pennsylvania Ave
West Plains, MO 65775 USA
Which is farther than you want to travel, however if you wanted to carpool I would be happy to drive sometime. I lived in that area for almost 18 years. I do not plan to have my system running until late may. I work 80+ hours every other week and then I am off for 6 days and I go to school. I will try to write more tomorrow night- I have a test in abnormal psy. and I have to go to class at 7AM and then go to work for 5 hours and then I will have more time since I will be off for 6 days.
