Hello to the Aquaponic Gardening Community:
I have only recently begun to explore aquaponics. I am a 98% organic gardener - I occasionally make exceptions for the sake of killing bermuda grass. My experience is with growing ornamentals - annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. My favored method is permaculture. I have occasionally grown a few vegetables and a few herbs but I don't find it as fulfilling. I was trained as a Master Gardener in Eugene, Oregon about ten years ago. I've been living in Sacramento and haven't gardened much since I moved here shortly after completing my training/volunteer time in Eugene. We moved to a new home about a year ago and I now have about a quarter acre available to garden. This past year I've been getting my hands dirty again and re-learning what was once second nature.
I'm intrigued by aquaponics because it uses so much less water and no weeding and no adding compost every year. As I careen toward 50, I see this as a way I can garden without such a serious toll on my body.

MK, you mention Permaculture being a favorite. Don't know if you're plugged in to the monthly Liberation Permaculture get-togethers at Sol Collective 2574 21st St. just south of Broadway -- LP announcment for TONITE: "Join us today 6-8pm for Liberation Permaculture's harvest potluck / seed saving gathering. You will get to enjoy fruits and veggies from the farm in exchange for help turning them into juice, food, and seeds. Feel free to bring your harvest to eat & seed!" Unfortunately I probably won't be at this one.
Welcome MK!
Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community! I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics. There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions. Everyone is quite happy to help out new members--no question is too basic.
A great place to start is to read the “How to Use This Site” link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Home page. You might also find the “Aquaponic Gardening Rules of Thumb” guidelines helpful.
Please add a profile image, participate and check in with us every day! We are constantly posting news about aquaponics and the good food movement.
Thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to getting to know you.

Hi MK,
Welcome to aquaponics and welcome to this forum. Lots of folks from Sac here, and some local events coming up too. I suggest checking out (and joining) Sacramento Aquaponics (under Groups in the green banner at the top.)
