"Ok, so I ran the amonia test on the urine/water sample and i got a reading of 2.4. I`m using a test kit i got at a pet store, using drops in test tubes and comparing colours on charts. I collect/store the urine in a glass mason jar."

"I`ve just started up too. My pH is up and has been up for a week now, at 8.5. My amonia is 0. I`ve not added anything yet. Except for a brief moment we had some minnows from our pond, i just got too excited to wait any longer. So with the fish came…"

"Tilapia are sub-tropical fish, they need rather warm water to grow and at least 55 degree F water to simply survive. If you are not going to have at least 6 months of water over 70 Degrees F, then you probably don't want to grow tilapia. In…"

I`m also starting up a basic barrel system.  I have many of the same start up questions as Greg as far as shelter and shade.  Do we have to be concerned about the rain diluting the system? Currently I`m watching wet snow falling outside.  Which brings me to my next big question.  What sort of fish will survive in my area?(Sherbrooke Québec, Canada)  I know where I can get live Catfish, Tilapia and Troute.  The Catfish and Tilapia are both from Chinese grocery stores, should I be concerned with…See More

not yet
If so, what type of system? (pick all that apply)
We are just building the Barel-ponic system.
Please tell us something else about yourself.
We definately fall into the newbie category. Recently(less than two years) we started a dairy farm. I`m milking about 30 cows twice a day. We also have two young girls three and five years old. All this leaves me with little free time, and I`ll admit that all of it is spent reading all i can about aquaponics. I stumbled apon your site in January and find it to have such a warm spirit. Very well organized and so helpful. I must run along now, today we are building the structure to support our barrels.

Are the rules different in Quebec ? Who were you talking to to?

Hi Kirsten,

I saw your message about cooling the water for trout. I've wrestled with this very issue in the past and concluded that the only way to keep the water reliably cool enough for trout was to use a chiller - Via Aqua makes one that works well, but is very pricey. Good luck with the rainbows.

We have just one rule: keep it cordial (no flaming!).

Thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to getting to know you...and thank you for your very kind remarks. Best of luck with your barrelponics system. Please post photos when you are done.
