I discovered aquaponics yesterday evening, think its extremely interesting, would like to learn alot more, would like to become an organic farmer, here in Ontario, I hate my job, and want to do something meaningful with my life. Green House is nearing competion hopefully another month or so...would like to speak with someone who uses half barrels like pakiponics...then what do you put in them gravel?
I don't heat my greenhouse in winter. I found last winter, the growbed kept plants alive, but eventually by Dec, the water in the pipes froze and that was the end of that. The tank also froze, but I had it sitting on a rack above the ground, so it wasn't insulated. This year, the tanks were dug into the ground to insulate from heat in summer, and cold in winter. I think it will be pretty successful. I used bubblewrap to add more insulation to keep the greenhouse warm. I've blogged about it here if you want more details. http://www.freestylefarm.ca/2011/05/07/backyard-aquaponics-2/
I've only had success with goldfish, and prawns. It's hard to find a supplier of tilapia in Ontario.
