Please tell us something else about yourself.: I am building a green house from re purposed materials this fall and I am looking forward to going full steam ahead in an aquaponics system. Looks like this site has a ton of good information and good people.

It looks pretty safe, forms an alkaline solution which will have a similar effects on the oils as sodium/poassium hydroxide - and any residue will put phosphates in your system - a component of fertiliser :) Wouldn't worry about adjusting the pH until you get the systems with water in it trying to get the cycle going.

Working for a chemical cleaning company I can tell you that a caustic solution will break the oils down into a lye soap that is soluble in water. Sodium or Potassium Hydroxide would do the trick. Potassium Hydroxide is used in aquaponics to balance the pH if necessary and also adds pottasium for the plants. This will be soluble in water and can be rinsed out. Once you are done a mild vinegar solution would neutralise the residue
