I am a manufacturing engineer. I have had a tropical fish setup for the last 44 years. 3 years ago I got in to hydroponic growing. I am looking to be totally organic for my plants and vegetables. I want to get out of the grocery store due to price and quality of product. I now want to know where my food source is coming from and how it was grown. I have a worm farm which the castings supports my raised bed gardening. I just stared checking out aquaponics a few months ago. With the direction I want to go aquaponics in my mine is the way to go and be totally organic. I am just getting into aquaponics by currently building a Travis Hughey aquaponic barrel system that includes flood and drain media and a raft bed. I am going to start my system using gold fish. This will get me up and running with an aquaponic system. My goal is to build a greenhouse with a room on the end to house 175 gallon fish tank 175 gallon reservoir and filter tank along with room for my worm bins for a controlled climate. I want to move on to raising tilapia and cat fish and grow vegetables year round.
