Recirculating Systems. Why do we pump water 24/7

Started this discussion. Last reply by Jeff S Aug 14, 2015. 13 Replies

Hi, I've been thinking a lot recently about our general assumption that we need to circulate our systems 24/7. After all plants do not take up nutrients in the dark. So they do not need moving water…Continue

Jeff S replied to Alan's discussion Recirculating Systems. Why do we pump water 24/7
"A similar thing happened to me when I just used the water circulation for aeration. I would turn the pump off at night to reserve heat and on during the day. Worked ok for a while but eventually the oxygen level gradually dissipated and I almost…"

David Marland replied to Alan's discussion Recirculating Systems. Why do we pump water 24/7
"Actually. The other week I noticed my air pump stoped when the timer stoped, the battery must have worn down during the night off periods? So I changed the power cords around so that the air pump is powered 24/7. Now."

Jeff S replied to Alan's discussion Recirculating Systems. Why do we pump water 24/7
"Yesterday while I was using my air pump for an air lift pump experiment, the water pump in the my IBC tank stopped. Within 2 hours the fish were gasping for air. It doesn't take long for issues to get critical. I do have a heavily stocked fish…"

David Marland replied to Alan's discussion Recirculating Systems. Why do we pump water 24/7
"For twelve months now I have used a timer, I set it for hourly cycles during the heat of the day with 15 minute off settings, at night I have the pump off for two hours at a time with 15 minute on settings. But I also use a 24/7 battery backup air…"

"Airlifts are a great way to aerate while lifting water and solids.  Regarding the link, I believe it is recommended that metal not be used in an aquaponics system.   My system has six media beds, which flood and drain twice each per 24…"

Alan replied to Alan's discussion Recirculating Systems. Why do we pump water 24/7

Jeff S replied to Alan's discussion Recirculating Systems. Why do we pump water 24/7

David replied to Alan's discussion Recirculating Systems. Why do we pump water 24/7

Jeff S replied to Alan's discussion Recirculating Systems. Why do we pump water 24/7
"I've recently increased aeration and water flow in my tank and the fish are definitely more active and eating more. Been at it for 2 years so I'm a slow learner."

George replied to Alan's discussion Recirculating Systems. Why do we pump water 24/7

I've just joined and think it is fantastic. I've asked a few questions. And had good answers. Great help and so great to know I am not the only crazy one out there who is loving this topic!!!

Keep up the good work.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community from Thailand! I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics. There is another member from Thailand - Renoo - who just joined today as well, and Affnan is from Malaysia.

We would love to see images / video of your system if you are willing to post them here.

We have just a few simple rules: stay on the subject of aquaponics and keep it cordial (no flaming!). If someone decides to break these rules they will get a warning, and then be banned from the community after that. But of course I’m hoping that never happens!

Thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to getting to know you.

Sylvia
