Well, I didn't go to India to do any gardening, but you know me. Once I saw the veggie garden, I just couldn't help myself. :) I was able to teach a friend down there about how weeds are nature's cover for earth and work to restore our soil by mining the deeper soil for nutrients and bring them topside to be composted along the surface, or by fixing nitrogen in the soil. They also help protect against soil erosion and water evaporation. So, after a couple lengthy discussions on the benefits of composting, not tilling, and keeping your soil covered, we went ahead and planted some indian chilies! I think I sold him on the idea that letting nature do some of the work for you can be easier and healthier for you and the garden.
