Tie straps are a great way of securing the plastic as well, with the fast moving thunderstorms and the ends being open I haven't had a problem with the plastic getting ripped off yet. I also poke holes in the plastic because of heavy rain and for wind if it does come in and try to lift the plastic, most times the wind shoots right through it but helps when you have an updraft likewise.

Actually, I believe my system wouldn't have did as good as it has without the plastic covering during these 90-100 degree temps, I was noticing I was getting leaves that looked burnt on the bottom underside of my plants which I believe is from the sun reflecting off of the white grow tubes. The reason I say that is because the plants on the end  not under the plastic canopy suffer worse as well as a few of my starter plants have died from the scorching heat.

As far as the light passing through, plants are like solar panels, as long as they have light coming in from every direction in doesn't have to be direct for photosynthesis to occur in plants, some like direct more than others. But the amount of light it allows through isplenty. The canopy actually helped during this heat, and with the ends open it doesn't allow heat build up at all.

Come fall or freezing time, I'll enclose the ends to retain heat and keep the leaves from exposure to frost. With my fish tank heater I should able to extend my growing season to november here in the midwest.

I'm thinking of getting some plastic covering as well, but my main concern is about the amount of light that it will allow to pass through.  Any advice?

Heck I'm not sure, just some plastic I picked up at a job site. I did just pick some at Lowes a couple of weeks ago, I'll check the box, I think its 6mm 12 x50.
