Comment by Chris Carr on June 1, 2012 at 10:18am: I roughly priced out building one the same volume as an IBC tote and it came out to around the same as acquiring a tote from craigslist so your estimate of 100-150 for this size sounds right.

There was a video of a build for one on this site a while ago. It appears to be more than strong enough.

The fish tank cost about $300 to build, keep in mind that's in the Bahamas, and we pay an average of 50% duty on import, so I figure at US prices probably in the range of $100-150.

Comment by Chris Carr on June 1, 2012 at 8:48am: I see you uploaded new images. Looks like you are still having some bowing issues but maybe it will hold for a while. If it comes to building a 2.0 I would suggest building walls from 2x4 like you would for an interior wall in a home, then cover that inside with the plywood. You want to take advantage of the strength of the wood through the width. Building it stronger than you need once is probably still cheaper than having to build it twice :)

Comment by Chris Carr on June 1, 2012 at 8:34am: Cool. That sounds a lot more sturdy. Do you have any updated pics? Just curious, is that a billboard you are using for a liner? Is it holding up well? I like the idea of using one, provided the dies or glues don't taint the water.

Comment by Wayne Hall on June 1, 2012 at 6:40am: This picture was of fish tank (revision 1), and yes the weight of the water caused the wood to bow and eventually separate at the corners. Eventually I figured it out and had to add 3 rows of 2x4 bracing along all the sides and used 4" corner brackets at the row junctions on the inside of the tank to keep it all together.....
