Peter, this worked out great for me, since you cannot purchase the 4'x8' boards in this country. They are all (roughly) already 2'x4'...Either from Dow or from Austrotherm...

Here is the specific thread where Peter breaks it down for us all in dollars and cents (or sense)

http://aquaponicscommunity.com/forum/topics/dollars-and-cents-linki...

as well as there being more about different spacings...

Enjoy!

Thanks, Vlad.  Really appreciate the diagram.  And I have been perusing the Raft group.  Hadn't come across any hard financials yet, though.

Bill, see if you can get more product into the same space by using a 8" on center spacing BUT with an offset. i.e so that the holes run diagonally across on 8" centers not lengthwise... something like this...

The "standard method on the right yields:

 48" x 72" = 3456 sq.in/144=24 sqft for 60 plants

The staggered spacing on the left yields:

48" x 62" = 3024 sq.in/144 = 21 sqft for the same 60 plants

That means:

3 / 24 = 12.5% increase in space. (3 extra feet out of 24)

which is an increase of 12% more plants in the same space.

All of this info (and much more...like cost analysis) is already over in the Raft Growers links that I sent you...

Thanks Peter.

So, that should be 9 holes on a 24x24 inch raft?  Also, typically what do you get per head?  I ask because I am building a business case for quasi-commercial AP center here in my town. Mayor is behind the idea, so is state's business development staff.  The more "real" numbers I can plug into the spreadsheet, the better.

Bill, 8" centers  ...these are a mini romaine called Spretnak...45 day lettuce ..very sweet, people love it. the heads are only about 8 inches tall.

Rob..   assuming a 4x8 raft, what's typical hole spacing and count to grow this type of lettuce (bib?).

yes, bringing them roots on,gives you the option of putting them back into the rafts if you dont sell them all. so far i have sold out every weekend. i had three heads left this week and traded them for other market goods.

If it doesn't sell can you stick back in the system?
