After the planter is hung using four strands of 20lb monofilament fishing line, it's water supply is fed into the top. Here, a 1/2 gallon per hour button dripper is used (be sure to follow the manufacturer's filtering guidelines). Yes, that's right, 1/2 gallon per hour, these are not the massive biofiltration planters that will support an entire aquaponics system. These are simply an additional feature that a person can add to an existing and established system. Either way, the key here is to not put water into the planter any faster than gravity can evacuate it, or the planter will leak by overflowing out of the funnel inside.
